When using airsoft guns, it is important to follow safety rules. Airsoft safety rules are not all that different from other firearm safety rules. One of the greatest risks of airsoft guns is when it is mistaken for a real gun and law enforcement or others use real guns because they feel they must defend themselves against a deadly threat. Airsoft safety should always include keeping the orange tip on the gun when transporting or when used where it could be mistaken for a real gun. When safety rules are followed, airsoft guns are a safe for children and adults.

Basic Airsoft Safety Rules

One of the safety rules that will prevent most accidents and injuries is always treat an airsoft gun as though it is loaded and cocked. Following this simple rule is very important because once you follow that rule; the other rules will naturally be followed. These are some basic safety rules you will want to follow:

  • Never point a airsoft gun at anything you don’t want to shoot
  • Unload the airsoft gun when not in use
  • Keep the orange tip on the airsoft gun
  • Don’t look directly down the muzzle
  • Follow directions when cleaning
  • Disconnect electronics when not in use
  • Use only recommended BB’s
  • Keep out of the reach of children
  • Supervise children who use airsoft guns
  • Wear safety gear

When storing or transporting an airsoft gun, keep the orange tip on the gun and be sure it is not accessible to children who may not understand gun safety rules. Airsoft guns don’t shoot by themselves; people shoot airsoft guns, so it is the responsibility of the people who shoot the guns to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Accidents When Airsoft Safety Rules are Not Followed

The most heartbreaking accidents that occur, with airsoft guns, is when it is mistaken for a real gun and a person is shot and killed. Often it is a child who doesn’t understand or sometimes even a developmentally disabled person. This can be prevented by simply leaving the orange tip on the gun. Being shot accidently with an airsoft gun isn’t usually deadly or serious, but it can happen. Young children and small pets are at a higher risk of a serious injury if shot with an airsoft gun than others. It is important to supervise children who are using an airsoft gun.

Airsoft Safety Gear

Eye injury is probably the most serious of the common airsoft gun injuries, but it can be easily prevented by wearing eye protection, which makes it the most important pieces of safety gear. For even more protection, a full mask should be worn during airsoft gun play. A mask is often mandatory to be able to play on public airsoft fields. To prevent bruises and broken skin from airsoft gun BB’s, it is important to wear thick clothing like military fatigues and cover all exposed skin. Gloves will protect hands when shooting.

Like any sport or recreational pastime, accidents and injuries do occur when using airsoft guns and rifles, but by following airsoft safety rules you can reduce and often eliminate the risks.
