Types of Airsoft Guns

Home » Types of Airsoft Guns

As an airsoft player, you have 3 different options when choosing your airsoft guns. The three types are Spring Loaded, Electric operated and Gas Powered. When buying airsoft guns, the price varies based on the quality and type. This price can range from $10 for lowest quality to over $1,000 for highest quality. It is recommended to rookies to begin with a low priced airsoft gun to learn with. Typically, spring loaded airsoft guns are in the lower price range compared to the other two types. On the other hand, Gas Powered airsoft guns are normally in the higher price range with electric operated airsoft guns in the middle. However, this doesn't mean you can't find high price and quality spring powered airsoft guns and vice versa. Below you will find simple descriptions of each of these airsoft guns.

Spring Airsoft Guns

These are excellent entry level Airsoft Guns for any new enthusiast to this sport. Styled after some of the world's famous firearms, spring loaded pellet airsoft guns are true to scale and easy to operate. They are very durable with extremely low failure rates. These models must be cocked prior to each shot (not very useful in an airsoft battle). The main advantage with these types of airsof guns are not dependent on external sources, such as air, gas, or battery.

Electric Airsoft Guns

Developed in Japan, these are the most frequently used and accessible category of airsoft guns. Usually, a rechargeable battery is used to power an electric motor that works the internal assembly to shoot the pellets. A series of three gears are mounted within a gearbox that the motor powers. There are many different kinds of electric powered airsoft guns, which are automatic (AEGs), hybrid, low powered (LPEGs), blowback (EBBs), mini, and pistols (AEP).

Gas Airsoft Guns

Pressurized gas is used to propel pellets; these airsoft guns are usually the most proficient of the three categories. The two most frequently used gases are HFC-134a and Green Gas, which is a blend of polysiloxane lubricant and propane. The uncommon gases are nitrogen, C02, and red gas. Gas powered airsoft guns lean to be used in pistols. All models are manufactured to a high degree of surface detail and dimension; these are for the more discerning collector.

Hybrid Airsoft Guns

In the summer of 2006, the new Hybrid airsoft guns arrived on the market. These are very similar to Automatic Electric Guns (AEGs) however the Hybrid has extra add-on to further replicate real firearms. The most noticeable add-on is the shell casings, which resemble a real bullet; with the complete blowback system it ejects the casing. This provides a realistic effect.

M4 Airsoft

M4 airsoft rifles allow for maximum firepower in a compact weapon. They may also be one of the most customizable airsoft guns available. Many M4 airsoft guns come equipped with tactical rail systems for adding optics such as laser and scopes. Foregrips, adjustable butt stocks, grenade launchers, and high capacity drum magazines are all common additions to M4 airsoft rifles.
