There are different types of airsoft guns and each will use different sources of power to expel the BB or pellet from the gun. The different types are the spring powered (pump), the electric powered, and gas powered airsoft guns. Nitrogen gas is one of the gasses used in the gas powered airsoft guns. Gas powered airsoft guns are preferred when simulating blowback and when adjustable velocity is preferred. It is also stable in all temperatures.

Types of Airsoft Gun Gas

There are different types of gas powered airsoft guns. Choosing the right type of gun will depend on how it is used, what it is used for, and regulations of the field that you are shooting at. Competitions may also have regulations on what type of guns and air can be used. These are the types of gas that are used for airsoft guns:

  • Nitrogen gas - it is a high pressured gas that is not affected by temperature changes
  • Green gas - most common and standard gas, 99% propane and 1% silicone, recommended for metal slide guns and may damage plastic slides, at room temperature it is about 110fps
  • Propane - an inexpensive gas, lubricant will need to be used with this gas
  • Red gas - should only be used with full metal slide airsoft guns, works in cold weather but may cause gun damage in warm weather
  • Duster gas - also known as HFC134a and top gas, at room temperature it is about 75psi, very weak gas so will need a light slide
  • CO2 - 12g cartridges are usually used, there are some guns with refillable air tanks

Nitrogen Airsoft Gas Safety

It is commonly known that it is important to follow safety rules when shooting airsoft guns, but remember you will also need to follow safety recommendations for handling nitrogen airsoft gun gas.

Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is not combustible and has a zero flammability (minimal fire hazard) rating. When working on your own airsoft gun to do repairs, there is a risk if there is still air in the gun or it is still connected to an air source because it can fire. You will need remove or disconnect the air source and release any air in the gun before beginning. This should also be done before storing an airsoft gun. All airsoft guns come with safety instructions that should be followed. When buying a used gun, you can go online for the owner’s manual on the manufacturer’s site.

Airsoft gun air pressure is set to shoot the pellets and BBs relatively safely, changing the pressure can cause serious injury and even death. Only certified paintball technicians trained to change air pressure should do it. They should also be the only ones to do repairs.
